ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems

The ISO 50001:2011 energy management standard will provide you with a management system that allows more control over your energy usage. The successful application of the standard will help you to reduce your energy costs through improved efficiency and enable you to monitor future usage and costs. Achieving ISO 50001 will keep you up to date with the latest industry best practice and keep you ahead of your competitors.

ISO 50001 certification will also provide a way of meeting the governments ESOS (Energy Saving Opportunities Scheme). This is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that are required to comply.

The government has set up ESOS to implement Article 8 (4-6) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive and will require qualifying organisations in the UK to carry out ESOS assessments every 4 years. All “large UK undertakings and their corporate groups” must carry out their ESOS assessment by 5th December 2015. You can find more information on the gov.uk website.

So what does it mean if I have achieved ISO 50001 certification?
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have stated that if your energy management system is certified by an approved certification body and covers all of your energy use, this will count as your ESOS assessment. This means you don’t have to carry out a further assessment. For more information about this route to compliance please call DAT Consulting and talk to one of our experienced consultants.

The advantages of taking this route are:

  • ISO 50001 will integrate with your existing ISO management systems, for example ISO 9001, which your employees will be familiar with. This will help keep disruption to a minimum.
  • ISO 50001 is a recognised international standard.
