ISO 14001:2026 now published and available for use.
Key Changes in ISO 14001:2026
If your organisation is certified to ISO 14001:2015 there will be a transition period in which you will be required to adapt your EMS to meet ISO 14001:2026 requirements.
ISO 14001:2015 remains current (including the Feb 24 climate change amendment) until the end of the transition period.
- Clause 4.1 and 4.2 – Consideration of environmental conditions, Formalise changes introduced in February 2024 to include climate change, pollution and biodiversity.
- Clause 5 – Increased focus on ethical leadership and greater involvement in the deployment of sustainability principles.
- Clause 6.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.4 and 6.1.5 – Clarified risk and risk opportunity assessments, Impacts across the value chain i.e. Design, procurement, Production, Use, disposal etc.
- Clause 6.3 – New clause added to ISO 14001 covering structured change management processes covering regulatory, operational and technical processes.
- Clause 8 – Operational controls strengthened covering supply chain sustainability, outsourced processes, life cycle requirements and emergency scenarios as part of risks / risk opportunities.
- Clause 9.2 and 9.3 - Internal audits may require defined objective, Management review sub clauses may require Inputs, processes and results.
- Clause 10.2 and 10.3 – Content from 10.1 integrated into 10.2 / 10.3
Preparing for transition to ISO 14001:2026
See BSI's ISO 14001:2026 - Key changes and Guidance web page and understanding the changes video. Based on information provided by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), the transition period from ISO 14001:2015 to ISO 14001:2026 is expected to be three years.
