ISO 9001 Requirements

What Does ISO 9001:2026 Require?

ISO 9001:2026 is the forthcoming revision of the internationally recognised standard for quality management systems (QMS). It is expected to replace ISO 9001:2015 in September 2026.

The standard provides a framework for organisations to consistently meet customer and applicable requirements, manage risks and opportunities, improve processes and increase customer satisfaction.

Understanding the ISO 9001:2026 requirements helps you develop a QMS that supports your organisation without creating unnecessary complexity or paperwork.

Key ISO 9001 Requirements

An effective quality management system or QMS should address areas including:

  • Leadership and commitment – Top management must demonstrate leadership and support the QMS.
  • Organisational context – Understand internal and external issues that could affect the QMS and its intended results.
  • Roles and responsibilities – Clearly define responsibilities, authority and accountability.
  • Quality policy and objectives – Establish appropriate quality commitments and measurable objectives.
  • Risk and opportunities – Identify and address risks and opportunities that could affect quality and performance.
  • Process management – Define and control the processes needed to deliver consistent products and services.
  • Customer focus – Understand customer requirements, monitor satisfaction and use feedback to drive improvement.
  • External providers – Ensure suppliers and other external providers are appropriately controlled.
  • Documented information – Maintain the information needed to support effective processes and demonstrate conformity.
  • Internal audits – Regularly evaluate whether the QMS is operating effectively and meeting requirements.
  • Management review – Review QMS performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Continual improvement – Use performance information, audit results and feedback to improve the QMS.

ISO 9001 does not require a mass of documentation.

An effective QMS is proportionate, easy to use and integrated into how an organisation provides and improves its products and/or services.
